Memorial Day

While none of our family members have made the ultimate sacrifice during war...we have had many family members serve in the armed forces. On Memorial Day we choose to celebrate them too! This year we were in Danville with Mark's family so we visited the graves of his grandfather and great-grandfather. Both of these men served in the U.S. Army, as did his grandmother (who is still living). I have never met these two men, but I know Mark really really loved his grandfather "Pop" and still looks up to him. It is nice to share stories and remember great men like these on this special holiday!

While visiting one of the graves our cute little 4 year old nephew carried a flag over to his great-great-grandfather's tombstone and put his hand on top for just a moment. I don't think he understands what the holiday is for or really understands the meaning of war in the first place, but I snapped a picture in the moment and I LOVE it!

If we had been in Utah we would have visited the graves of my grandfather's. Both my Grandpa Jennings and my Grandpa DeYoung (pictured) served in the armed forces as well. Unlike Mark's family who shares their war stories, neither of my grandfathers liked to talk about their time in the military. I know my Grandpa Jennings was an MP, but I don't really know what Grandpa DeYoung did during his time in the service. Either way, action or no action every man and woman who serves in the armed forces deserves a great big round of applause in my book!
