Gizmo vs Shelby

On our evening walk today Gizmo and I met Shelby. She looks almost exactly like this picture on the left! They were both excited to meet the other and had tension on their leashes. I warned Shelby's owner that Gizmo sometimes get aggressive with big dogs while he is on his leash (left over effects of being on a chain before we adopted him). Shelby's owner warned me that she had been crated for a long time and doesn't have great social skills. We decided to try it anyway with leashes secure.

It started out just fine and dandy! They sniffed, wagged their tails, and seemed to like each other. Then goof-ball Gizmo decided to snap and snarl at Shelby. Where in the world did he get the idea that he could take on a Great Dane? Just in case you haven't met a Great Dane before here is a picture I found on the internet of one with its owner, and here is a picture of my 17 pound dog (can you even see him in my lap?). Now you tell me...what the heck Gizmo was thinking!

Fortunately Shelby reacted very well. She lifted her head (out of Gizmo's reach) but then lunged forward. Her owner pulled her back as I pulled Giz away. All in all not bad for a first encounter. It would be interesting to see what would happen if we got the two of them into the dog park together. In the meantime.... I am reassessing my baby's intelligence. ;-)

When you're little, you have to have a bigger attitude! My little Gizzy-goo dog nephew is a very smart dog; he just has the Napoleon syndrome.

Andy and I LOVE great danes. In fact, right before we got married he decided he wanted to "adopt" one but I quickly talked him out of the idea since our landlord didn't like dogs and it was too small of a space anyway. SO at least Gizzy holds his own!
