Thanksgiving Cake

The music teacher in my school offered to pay me for a decorated cake. I was so excited that of course I said "yes". I gave her some ideas of what I could do and she choose a turkey. I practiced a few weeks ago in Danville but created the final cake this week.

The experience did not go as planned. Sunday I baked two cakes, put them together with chocolate pudding filling in the middle, iced the cake in white, and started doing the basket weave around the edges. I was decorating the cake on the coffee table so I could sit while I decorated for over three hours. Mark needed help with the dishes so I stopped working and started helping. When I came around the corner I found Gizmo bridged across the the space between the couch and coffee table eating my cake. I was devastated! Hours and hours of work was ruined in only a few minutes. After breaking down and crying over my destroyed work, Mark made a run to the grocery store to purchase 2 more cake boxes, more powdered sugar, shortening, and eggs. We stayed up until midnight re-baking the double layer cakes so I could work again Monday.

After school I started the process over again torting the cakes with filling, icing the whole thing, and doing the basket weave around the edges. I made two more batches of icing and colored it in red, yellow, orange, and brown. I completed the cake! I think it turned out wonderful! As I went to put the cake in the carrier I realized my rectangle carrier wasn't tall enough to hold the very large circle cake. It was 10:30 pm and all of the stores that carry cake caddies were closed. The cake had to be delivered Tuesday so again Mark had to come to my rescue. Tuesday afternoon he went to the store to by the circle carrier and fought the onslaught of parents picking up children in front of the school to bring me the cake I had so carefully created. The music teacher loved it, and although I made NO money (I actually lost money) thanks to Gizmo I did have a proud creation and a happy customer.

The cake ended up so cute (despite the stressful situation).
